Born: 14 May 1997 (age 25 years), Gbagada, Ikeja

Full name: Daniel Benson

Young Buju, from Awka Ibom State, first resided in Gbagada with his mother before relocating to Mowe, Ogun State.

He developed a love for music when he was still in school. He claimed that he frequently sang tunes by artists such as D’Bang, P-Square, 9ice, and Olu Maintain.

Speaking of how he picked up Yoruba, Buju said that even though he is not Yoruba, his late mother taught him the language.

Additionally, Buju’s mother battled cancer for years before passing away at a young age.

Early life

When Buju was a junior in high school, he first began to compose music. He used to go by the moniker Drizzle but later adopted the stage name Buju. He began rapping and eventually joined the choir. At valedictory services, he started solo, and over time, he brought his enthusiasm to the institution.

He stopped playing music for a while because he was constantly comparing himself to other brilliant individuals and thinking they were superior to him. He developed his look and drew inspiration from J Hus, Damian Marley, Buju Banton, and Burna Boy.

He held an IT job when he was still a student, which he detested bitterly. In contrast to the labor he had to do, he believed that creating and playing music was his vocation. He was influenced by the Jamaican recording artist Buju Banton when he came up with his stage name one day. By creating the acronym Beauty Underneath Just Understood, he gave the word a specific significance.

He then decided to pursue music. He released his debut album, “Catch a Vibe,” in February 2018. His second album, “A Day in Lagos,” had a song video that was shot on a boat. This original decision was made entirely on the spur of the moment by Buju and his team while they were out on a canoe expedition. The musician characterizes his style as an afro-fusion expression. He believes Burna Boy to be the most varied artist he has encountered.

He had previously listened to Burna Boy a lot and eventually had the chance to interact with him and work with him. They collaborated to create the remix of “L’Enu.” Zlatan is another well-known artist with whom Buju has collaborated. His pals persisted in encouraging him to get in touch with the music mogul despite his initial skepticism that he could achieve such a figure for one of his songs. Zlatan decided to work with the budding artist after noticing his talent. They produced “Spiritual,” which became a huge hit and went viral on several streaming services.
The announcement of Buju’s signing by Burna Boy’s record label, Spaceship Records, on April 16, 2020, made him the label’s third act after Burna Boy and his sister Nissi Ogulu.
