He had stumbled into acting at Stanford after taking an elective in improvisational theatre and starting to participate in student theater. He was asked to perform in Gas, a one-man theater production by Maria Irene Fornés. Actress and Stanford lecturer Alma Martinez pushed him to pursue a career as an actor. Gonzalez chose to pursue acting after earning a degree from Stanford in 1998, and with Martinez’s assistance, he became involved in the San Francisco theater scene. He was once advised to go by “Nicholas Edward” and use his middle name Edward to hide his nationality, but he rejected it.

Career

Gonzalez relocated to Los Angeles in 1998, where he was cast in bit parts in shows including NBC’s One World and ABC’s Dharma and Greg. The Lifetime television film My Little Assassin, starring Joe Mantegna and Gabrielle Anwar, featured Gonzalez next as Fidel Castro’s kid. His first significant exposure came from his part as Andy, the homosexual yuppie on MTV’s Undressed, in which he was featured for six episodes. In 2000, Gonzalez finished shooting two movies.

The first, Scenes of the Crime, which starred Jeff Bridges, Jon Abrahams, and Noah Wyle, had its world debut at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival. Dominique Forma served as the director. The second movie, called Spun, was an independent production with Mena Suvari, Mickey Rourke, Brittany Murphy, and John Leguizamo in the lead roles. It played at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival.

Gonzalez also got the lead role in Resurrection Blvd., a Showtime original series that debuted on June 26, 2000. Gonzalez portrayed Alex Santiago, a pre-med student who dropped out of college to pursue a career as a professional boxer. The film was a success, and it quickly became a regular weekly series on the network. While working on Resurrection Blvd., Gonzalez starred in episodes of Walker, Texas Ranger, and That ’70s Show. Gonzalez also supplied Nick Mendoza’s motion-capture-based physical performance in the video game Battlefield: Hardline.

Gonzalez’s most well-known role to date came when he was chosen as a series regular in the medical drama The Good Doctor as surgeon Dr. Neil Melendez. His portrayal of the character was partly based on his father and older brother, both of whom are doctors.

Dr. Neil Melendez was an attending surgeon at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital, where he oversaw surgical residents. He was a clever and highly competent individual. Melendez didn’t play games, was constantly agitated about work/business issues, and demanded excellence from himself and his tenants. He did, however, have a lighter, sometimes hilarious side that showed up when he wasn’t tending to job problems. In addition, despite his frequent sternness, he was frequently supportive, particularly of his ailing patients and their families and friends. Melendez has a younger sister who, as a toddler, sustained a catastrophic brain injury after falling out of a tree. As a result, his sister is confined to a nursing home. At the end of season 3, Melendez suffered injuries in an earthquake that damaged his bowels beyond repair, and subsequently died. In the first two episodes of season 4, a grieving Claire hallucinates Melendez.
